چکیده

As a part of the third Tibetan Plateau Experiment of Atmospheric Sciences (TIPEX III) in China, a Raman water vapor, cloud and aerosol lidar and a coherent wind lidar were operated in Naqu (31.48°N, 92.06°E) with a mean elevation of more than 4500 m above MSL in summer of 2014. During the field campaign, the water vapor mixing ratio profiles were obtained and validated by radiosonde observations. The mean water vapor mixing ratio in Naqu in July and August was about 9.4 1 g kg and the values vary from 6.0 to 11.7 1 g kg near the ground according to the lidar measurements. Furthermore, using concurrent measurements of vertical wind speed profiles from the coherent wind lidar, we calculated the vertical flux of water vapor that indicates the water vapor transport through updraft and downdraft. The fluxes were for a case at night with large-scale nonturbulent upward transport of moisture. It is the first application, to our knowledge, to operate continuously atmospheric observations by utilizing multi-disciplinary lidars at the altitude higher than 4,000 meters, which is significant for research on the hydrologic cycle in the atmospheric boundary layer and lower troposphere in the Tibetan Plateau.

Lidar and Ceilometer Observations and Comparisons of Atmospheric Cloud Structure at Nagqu of Tibetan Plateau in 2014 Summer

In the project of the Third Tibetan Plateau Experiment of Atmospheric Science (TIPEX III), the intensive observation of cloud and precipitation in Nagqu was conducted from 1 July to 31 August 2014. The CL31 ceilometer and a WAter vapor, Cloud and Aerosol Lidar (WACAL) were deployed and focused on studying the cloud macroscopic characteristics and vertical distribution. The statistical result of...

Lamp mapping technique for independent determination of the water vapor mixing ratio calibration factor for a Raman lidar system.

We have investigated a technique that allows for the independent determination of the water vapor mixing ratio calibration factor for a Raman lidar system. This technique utilizes a procedure whereby a light source of known spectral characteristics is scanned across the aperture of the lidar system's telescope and the overall optical efficiency of the system is determined. Direct analysis of th...

The Setup and the Performances of L’aquila Raman Lidar and Standard Ptu and Pto3 Balloon Soundings for Envisat Validation

We report the design and the performances of a Raman lidar for monitoring the tropospheric aerosol backscattering and extinction coefficients, water vapor mixing ratio and cloud liquid water. After describing the system components, along with the current limitations and options for improvement, we report examples of observations. The PTU and PTO3 balloon soundings are carried on with standard i...

MODIS observed seasonal and interannual variations of atmospheric conditions associated with hydrological cycle over Tibetan Plateau

[1] This paper aims to provide a prototype research of how MODIS observations can help to better understand surface and atmosphere conditions over the Tibetan Plateau. Snow melt and summer rainfall over the Tibetan Plateau provide the origin for most of the rivers in South Asia. Therefore, adequately monitoring as many components of the hydrological cycle as possible over the Tibetan Plateau ca...

Examination of the traditional raman lidar technique. II. Evaluating the ratios for water vapor and aerosols.

In a companion paper [Appl. Opt. 42, 2571 (2003)] the temperature dependence of Raman scattering and its influence on the Raman and Rayleigh-Mie lidar equations were examined. New forms of the lidar equation were developed to account for this temperature sensitivity. Here those results are used to derive the temperature-dependent forms of the equations for the water vapor mixing ratio, the aeros...
